Why is my HVAC System Making Noises?

Strange noises coming from your HVAC system can mean a variety of things. The types of noises can often tell you what exactly is in need of repair, removal, or replacement. Here are a few of the main noises your system may be making and what you can do to fix them.

There are a couple of reasons why your HVAC system is making a rattling noise. One reason could be that an internal piece of hardware is loose. This requires an HVAC technician’s assistance to ensure the piece gets tightened before causing any further damage to the inside of the unit. Rattling sounds can also be due to a crack in your furnace’s heat exchanger. This type of problem is one of the biggest causes of carbon monoxide leaks, so leaving the crack untreated can be extremely harmful to anyone who enters your space.

Wondering why your walls sound like they’re hissing? You may have a leaking air duct. This type of fix requires a ventilation professional and should be repaired as soon as the noise arises. When air escapes from the ducts, the noise often sounds like a light hiss or whistle, which can be both annoying and costly. Allowing this noise to go on for long periods of time can cause your energy bills to increase, due to the excess air being pushed out of the system.

Clicking can be a natural noise when turning your unit on and off. If the clicking noise continues to occur once the unit has been running for a while, you will need to turn your system off and call an HVAC expert. This noise is mainly caused by an ill-functioning capacitor. If your failing capacitor continues to run, it can be destructive of your entire system.
